That’s My Bush

Product Image: Last Picture Show, The (1971)
My rating: 4 out of 5

I see now why this film won two academy awards for acting. Who knew that Cloris Leachman could play such a complex, and strangely sexy character? While this film was the debut of Cybil Shepard, it was the three older women in the film the really made it special. Cloris Leachman won the academy award for best supporting actor for her portrayal of Ruth Popper, the bored wife of the local high school basketball and football coach, who may or may not be a homosexual, but who definitely is not giving his wife the attention that she needs, or deserves. She has an affair with young Sonny Crawford, played buy G. W. Bush look a like, Timothy Bottoms. This guy looks so much like W, that it was distracting for me. He looked like a young W, and now, he pretty much makes a career out of looking like him, he stared in the Comedy Central series That’s My Bush. Cybil Shepard’s Character’s mother is played by Ellen Burstyn, the mom from the Exorcist. She did a fine job of playing a wild, selfish, but still maternal character in a repressed, culturally deprived small Texas town. The part of Genevieve the generous diner operator is played by respected stage actress Eileen Brennan.
I was really surprised at the amount of nudity in this movie. I think that because it is about the 1950’s and it is in black and white, it is very surprising to see naked teenagers left and right. The good news is that we get to see a young Cybil Shepherd topless, the bad news is we also see a young but very goofy looking Randy Quaid in the buff.
The look of this film was amazing. Polly Platt and Peter Bogdanovich did an excellent job of transporting the viewer to 1950’s rural Texas. This film reminded me of watching Citizen Cain. The Camera work and direction was truly inspired.
Anyway, if you have never seen this film, or if it has been a while, I encourage you to take a look. The DVD also includes a documentary about the making of the film which includes the director and all of the living actors, with the notable exception of Timothy Bottoms.
