Ok, once again, I am wishing for a Linux nerd buddy….or perhaps a Linux nerd for hire. I have been working on installing and configuring GRPL’s ISM to manage our public work stations. After weeks of tinkering with FreeBSD and trying to figure out the ins and outs of the VI editor and the CPAN perl stuff, I have a FreeBSD server running Apache, MYSQL, mod-perl, the ISM modules etc. But at this point, I don’t know enough about network administration to get the whole thing working. I am sure that if I could have one afternoon with someone who is familiar with this, I could have it all going. At this point, I am sure that the library would pay for this help, as the cost would still be considerably smaller than buying a product such as PC Cop. I am sure that I would be able to keep it going and make changes…I just am not quite up to getting the whole thing off the ground.
I think that this might be a great opportunity for libraries to help each other out. Perhaps I could do a blogging/IM/Podcasting workshop in exchange for half a day with a network guy….
