Flickr, Tagging and the F-Word Jessamyn West

Social Software maters because : we know more because people are working together… sort of like Amazon Reviews etc.

Flickr is easy to use

  • Easy to upload
  • Easy to find
  • Easy to share– creative commons license
  • What’s the big deal?

    • Tagging
    • Metadata…
    • by me
    • by my family and friends
    • by anyone?

    tags tell “aboutness”
Anyone can add tags if you let them. You can look at YOUR photos with a certain tag, or you can look at EVERYONE”S pictures with that tag.

Patterns emerge based on popularity of tags.

Tags allow people to describe things in a way that is useful to them. You can learn what your user thinks is important.

    The F-Word

    • User created metadata
    • “grassroots community classification of digital assets”
    • flat namespace
    • not mutually exclusive with other systems
    • helps with scalability problems with professionally created metadata
    • helps users in the naming process
